Job Posting: Part-time Children's Ministry Coordinator

June 07, 2017

Applications due 6/30/17 for Mid-August 2017 start date

JOB OPENING: Part-time, temporary ministry coordinator for children

St. James Cathedral, Chicago, seeks to appoint a short-term coordinator for three key areas of its work with children for the remainder of 2017. The three principal tasks are:

Overseeing the work of the Sunday School and nursery on Sunday mornings
The cathedral offers Sunday School program to three age groups in separate rooms, staffed by volunteer teachers and parents. The coordinator will be required to ensure there is appropriate provision and cover for this ministry, liaising with parents and teachers as necessary; the coordinator should be capable and comfortable leading or assisting at sessions in any of the three rooms as required. It may be that the nursery and the pre-K Sunday School room will need to work together on occasions, and that decision will also be part of the planning undertaken by the coordinator

Scheduling the liturgical ministries of the 9 a.m. Sunday morning service
The role of acolytes and readers are normally undertaken by children at the 9 a.m. liturgy on Sundays. The coordinator will be required to draw up a monthly roster of duties, and liaise with parents, the Head Verger, and cathedral clergy about the planning of this liturgy.

Coordinating parent volunteers and other start-up administration for the Choir School
In the fall, the cathedral is launching a new program for choristers, involving one full Wednesday evening of activity each week. The coordinator will be responsible for rostering parent volunteers to help support the work of the Director of Music and Organ Scholar. S/he will also be responsible for coordinating choristers’ meals on Wednesday evenings.

Time commitment: 1 ½ days per week (12 hours) including Sunday
Compensation: $900/month (no benefits except employer social security portion)
Start date: Mid-August 2017

The successful candidate will need to meet the following criteria:

  • Experience of Sunday School ministry with elementary and pre-school children in a volunteer or paid capacity.
  • Experience of working with volunteers in a church/charity context.
  • Familiarity with teaching Godly Play sessions.
  • Helping welcome and sustain families with young children who attend or visit the cathedral.
