In February while undergoing training as an army chaplain, I had the pleasure of meeting 2nd Lieutenant Jason Poole. Jason is an ROTC Cadet in the battalion I serve in the US Army Reserve and a senior at University of Illinois Chicago. Jason and I have more in common than sharing the same uniform: we both love Summer in the City (SITC). Quickly after meeting I learned that Jason, and his younger sister and brother, were SITC campers from 2008-2011. He shared stories of the bus rides from his home on the Southside of Chicago to St. James Cathedral filled with anticipation, participating in performing arts and choir, and, a highlight for him, touring the United Center! Jason recounted the kindness of the camp counselors and volunteers that he met at St. James Cathedral. He is extremely grateful for his experiences with SITC, not only for him but for his whole family. He described how hard his mother worked and how grateful she was to have a safe and fun place to send her children during the summer.
Summer in the City changes lives, not only of the campers who participate, but of everyone involved, volunteers and staff included. I asked Jason if he would like to share anything with those who may be interested in supporting Summer in the City (financially or with their time and talent!) and he said, “One thing I would share is that Summer in the City is a great opportunity for kids around Chicago to learn about cultural differences in the diverse environment while sharing the same recreational experiences. You’ll meet friends that you’ll never forget, and you will have opportunities that are off-limits to the average person! It’s like an everyday field trip.”
Registration for Summer in the City is now open for youth ages 8-13. SITC is also hiring Junior Counselors (youth ages 14-17) as well as a Camp Manager and Camp Counselors. If you are interested in supporting SITC visit our website for more information about volunteering and donating. Contact the Rev.
